MOY PARK JOINS THE MARFRIG GROUP - ONE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST MEAT BUSINESSES
Food today is truly a global enterprise. The measure of success in the future will depend on processors operating on a scale not imagined a decade ago.
This is the simple rationale for the OSI Group transferring its chicken businesses in both Brazil and Europe to the Marfrig Group as of today, June 23, 2008. These are Moy Park in Europe (GB, France and Netherlands based operations) and in Brazil, the Penasul and Braslo companies.
Marfrig says it sees Moy Park's operations and standing in the EU as a fundamental next stage in building its global supply base entirely bespoke to the customers needs for locally produced fresh chicken, along with South American beef, lamb, pork and many other added value food products.
The Marfrig Group has watched Moy Park's development over time and expect to benefit from bringing their expertise and energy into the group. Scale of operating is everything as the company moves forward, added to which Moy Park is a business built on the firm foundation of a local farming and production base.
Marfrig was started in 1986 and is today reckoned to be the world's 4th largest beef company - its scale is immense with a daily slaughter throughput of around 13,000 head of cattle through 18 abattoirs and 13 processing plants located across South America in Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. The Group also processes lamb and pork on a similar scale, as well as having interests in further processing of potato, pasta, pizza and fish products.
Quoted on the Brazil Stock Market, Marfrig Group has current annual sales of approaching £1.2 billion. The company employs some 23,000 people worldwide.
Now with Moy Park in the Marfrig Group, the company comes closer to becoming a major player in the global chicken business - its stated aim being to supply its increasingly broad customer base with a continually diversified and dynamic product portfolio, with the focus always on meeting the consumers' highest and changing expectations in all markets. The Marfrig by-line is 'Quality Comes First'.
Moy Park managing director, Nigel Dunlop said of the new development: "To stay ahead these days requires a continual investment stream into both plant and people. We believe Marfrig will fully support us in achieving our ambitions across our operations in Northern Ireland, England, France and the Netherlands. This can only have the most positive benefits for our customers and everyone involved with Moy Park, now and in the future.
"Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the development of our company," adds Dunlop.
