EU GIVES APPROVAL FOR MOY PARK/MARFRIG GROUP ACQUISITION AND DEAL COMPLETED
Today, November 3 2008, marks a new era for Northern Ireland based Moy Park as the company formally becomes part of the Marfrig Group, four months after it was announced its previous owner, the OSI Group, was to transfer Moy Park to the £1.2billion Marfrig food group. The deal, given recent EU approval, involves Marfrig acquiring Moy Park and the poultry interests of OSI in Brazil. As a result OSI becomes a significant shareholder in the Marfrig Group.
Marfrig's founder and president, Marcos Antonio Molina dos Santos commented:
"Moy Park has an enviable, solid reputation with consumers and customers. We look forward to working with all the people in Moy Park to continue to build a strong, EU based food business. Marfrig has a high quality food processing base across South America where our production facilities are world class. We therefore will be complementing Moy Park's activity in the EU.
"Marfrig's guiding principle is 'Quality Comes First' which is totally in keeping with the long established Moy Park philosophy. The transaction we have now finalised gives Moy Park the opportunity to achieve greater scale and competitive edge in an increasingly global marketplace."
Moy Park will be maintaining its strong commitment to local farming and primary production - this rests firmly at the core of the business.
With some 500+ farmers working with Moy Park in Northern Ireland and England, the company is clearly a major supporter of agriculture and local food production. Over the past six years alone, Moy Park has invested +£120 million and is today acknowledged as one of the most advanced, production efficient poultry businesses in terms of farming, welfare and production.
Nigel Dunlop, who took over as managing director of Moy Park in January 2008, says:
"We are delighted to now be part of the Marfrig Group. Our plan, already in place, is to establish Moy Park as the market's 'Premier Provider' - this means providing consumers with genuinely high quality, locally farmed and locally produced food at a price that provides a fair return to us and our hundreds of contract farmers. With Marfrig, in time, we shall widen the range of product we offer, so further helping our customers' appeal to the consumer.
"A business like ours requires continual and consistent investment in people and plant in order to stay ahead. Marfrig has more than demonstrated, in its +20 years of phenomenal growth, that a steady capital investment stream generates both medium and long term rewards. We are delighted to have a new parent which is already an established and respected major player in the global food market."
Moy Park is headquartered in Northern Ireland and employs some 7,000 people in total across its operations there, England, France and the Netherlands. Current annual sales are around £700m.
